A leaf is the intonation of a pencil.

Consider a sequence of pencils. This sequence will have two (2) endpoints, called balls. A leaf, then, is any pencil conjoined on the chain. For such a sequence, there are at most two leaves, representing sequence:start (initiation) and sequence:stop (termination), which themselves can occupy the balls.
